Kirsty Mitchell’s late mother Maureen was an English teacher who spent her life inspiring generations of children with imaginative stories and plays. Following Maureen’s death from a brain tumour in 2008, Kirsty channelled her grief into her passion for photography.

She retreated behind the lens of her camera and created Wonderland, an ethereal fantasy world. The photographic series began as a small summer project but grew into an inspirational creative journey.

‘Real life became a difficult place to deal with, and I found myself retreating further into an alternative existence through the portal of my camera,’ said the artist. (read the rest here).

Hey Genei,

Since this is the second time your name has popped up in my email box, I figure I better respond. I have taken a look at your photos twice now - nothing has changed since the last time. I take on new assistants every year. These assistants aren’t just carrying my bags and switching out lenses. They are also shooters. Looking at your photos, I need someone with more experience - with OCF, with aperture, even with putting your best work forward - you have way better photos than the toe on the front page. I promise. I’m also not even sure what sort of photography you are interested in - I shoot mainly weddings - I see that you have assisted wedding photographers - one of which I know and would love to chat with him about you so maybe if you can hone your craft in this next year you can email me next wedding season and shoot with me.

I wanted to pass along an email I got when I was first starting out and did the same thing as you - asked photographer if I could assist them. I was more so begging though and lucky for me, I told an amazing photographer that I would be super quiet and would just carry her bags and I knew what lenses are what that I could hand her and I did it for not a single cent for almost 2 years. Because I wanted that experience and I knew with every ounce of my being that photography was what I was meant to be doing. Other photographers didn’t give me a shot but always offered great advice to which I totally listened. This was advice that stuck with me for a long time. You have to get good on your own before you can do this. Ask everyone you know - just take pictures every day. I don’t leave the house without my camera. You never know what you may see along side the road or what you might get into that will be worth photographing

An e-mail i got today…Well you dont have to be a cunt about it lady
